On Friday, November 8, 2013, I was notified that my
position at AT&T was one of 200 that was going to be out sourced to Tech
Mahindra (an Indian Company). 30 of the
200 AT&T employees were going to be offered jobs but I was not one of
them. So, once I become “officially”
surplus” on December 2nd, I will have approximately 60 days to find
a new job (by January 31st) or I will be terminated! (Oh, sounds so permanent and somewhat
violent!
This is the story of my journey to unemployment and
God working in my life. I have been
praying for the opportunity to make a job change and it looks like God finally
has answered my prayers; not exactly the way I expected but answered nun the
less.
I had been thinking about other options rather than
AT&T over the last year or so. The
main thing I wanted to do was to make a difference in peoples’ lives. So, I was thinking about working for a
non-profit organization. I wanted to work
with people directly (from a social work perspective that is) but am not really
qualified (no social work degree). I do
have a degree in Math Education so I may look into that area.
I have the details on the company’s early retirement
offer and it looks pretty good to me. I
can apply for early retirement any time from 11-12 through 12-16 but will need
to finalize my decision by 12-6 which is my last day before going on vacation
for the rest of the year. The other
option would be not to retire and try to find another job at AT&T before January
31st. If I did not find a job
before the, I would be terminated. The
good news is that I have a month or so to make a decision or look for another
job.
I posted on Facebook that this was the most
exciting thing to happen in my life since my prostate cancer. I have been struggling with this decision for
a long time and have actually updated my resume and LinkedIn profile. The company’s early retirement / surplus
announcement has made this an easier decision for me.
I had been hoping that I could make it to my
35th Service Anniversary on May 29th but it looks very
likely that that is not going to happen.
It looks like I will end up end not quite four months shy of 35
years!!!! If I was terminated on January
31st that would be quite a 60th birthday gift (just 4
days late)!!! However, this could be the
best birthday present ever!!!! J
The most amazing part about this is God’s
timing. If I would have gotten this retirement offer BEFORE hearing that my
job had been eliminated, I think I might have really struggled thinking that I
needed to work another 5 years or so at AT&T. But, now, knowing that my current job is going
away, it made this decision kind of a no brainer.
Again, I have been praying about a job change
but this is probably not the way I would have done it BUT I am thankful that
God is in charge. So, I see this as an
answer to a yearlong or more prayer request. So, there seems to be a lot of changes and
decisions to be made over the next 30 days.
It is hard to think of almost 35 years at AT&T coming to an
end. My last day of work could be less
than a month away! I do need prayer for
wisdom for a new job and career direction if I do retire from AT&T this
year.
This is kind of an unreal but very exciting
time! I need to continue to pray about
what God wants me to do. Since I don’t
have a social work background, my educational background may be the key. Also,
I am going to try a little different approach to getting a job. This may sound naive but I am praying that God
will bring a job to me instead of me having to go out and find one. So, at least for right now, until God tells me
differently, I am going to let Him be my job recruiter!
I don’t know how this story is going to pan
out but I felt that God wanted me to pass along my current thinking on my job
search because I think God wants to show Himself working in my life to all of
you.
I hope in some way this is an encouragement to
all of you to continue to trust God in all aspects of your life. Some of you probably know from my Facebook
post that I feel that God also has given me a new theme song for my life.
Interestingly enough, God gave me this song the morning right before I got the
news that my job was going to be surplused. So, He just wanted to affirm me before the
news. So, sit back, trust God and see
what He is going to do, not only in my life but YOURS!
Below are the lyrics to BRANDON HEATH’s "Give Me Your Eyes" that
I felt that God gave me this morning before I heard about my job situation. I thought this was my queue to maybe move onto
another job. It really moved me this
morning.

LYRICS
"Give Me Your Eyes"
Looked down from a
broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight
Touched down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breathe in the familiar shock
Of confusion
And chaos
All those people goin' somewhere
Why have I never cared?
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what's underneath
There's a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
Too ashamed to tell his wife
He's out of work, he's buyin' time
All those people goin' somewhere
Why have I never cared?
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
I've been there a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
Well I want a second glance
So give me a second chance
To see the way You've seen the people all along
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Give me Your Eyes (Give me Your eyes for just one second)

I haven't visited your blog since your prostrate cancer, so to say say I'm amazed that your job is being terminated is an understatement! I just want to encourage you. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would take "early retirement at age 45 from a job I totally enjoyed. The reduced income (I'm assuming you'll receive some type of monthly retirement check)was the big shock. My job loss was the result of Al Gore "reorganizing" BPA. October 1, everyone would have had new suprvisors. Rather than submit myself to all that chaos, I chose to take the $25,000 retirement bribe and leave - never regretted it for a moment. So . . . my advice (for what it's worth)is - retire and run. Spend what's left of your life doing something you enjoy. My comment upon retirement was, "I spent 25 years working for the government. I'd like to spend the next 25 years (or more) working for God." Sounds like you want to do the same. Go for it!
Love,
Candy
